SUNY Rockland Welcomes Ben Newberg as Women’s Basketball Head Coach
SUNY Rockland has announced the appointment of Ben Newberg as head coach of the Women's Basketball program. Newberg brings more than 15 years of collegiate coaching experience across NCAA Division I, II, III, and NJCAA levels.
"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead Rockland women's basketball," Newberg said. "After speaking with Athletic Director Ed Bajor, I understand what it will take to return the program to success. With the resources and staff in place, I'm confident we can build something exciting for our student-athletes and fans."
Newberg joins Rockland after three standout seasons at NJCAA Division II SUNY Sullivan, where he guided the team to a 66–19 record, three Region XV championships, and three Region XV Coach of the Year honors. His teams were nationally ranked in two of his three seasons, went undefeated in Region XV play, and produced three NJCAA Division II All-Americans. In 2023-24, Sullivan finished 25–5 and placed in the NJCAA Top 20, with seven players earning All-Region accolades.
Previously, Newberg revitalized the program at Medgar Evers College, delivering its winningest season of the decade in 2019-20 and mentoring 1,000-point scorer Cyndi Whyte. He also led Borough of Manhattan Community College to a 45–27 record from 2015–18, including two CUNYAC Championship appearances and a Region XV finals berth.
Newberg's résumé includes assistant coaching roles at City College of New York, SUNY New Paltz, Mercy University, and SUNY Sullivan's men's program, as well as a stint as team manager for SUNY Albany Men's basketball.
"Ben's track record of building competitive programs and developing student-athletes speaks for itself," said A.D. Ed Bajor. "We're thrilled to welcome him to the Hawks family."
